Roddy Ricch grabs first chart-topping hit with “The Box,” thanks to viral videos

Overcoming tough competition from Justin Bieber’s latest single, “Yummy,” Compton rapper Roddy Ricch achieved his first No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 with “The Box.” It racked up 68.2 million U.S. streams and 11,000 digital song sales just last week, according to Billboard. Meanwhile, his debut studio album, Please Excuse Me For Being Antisocial, also reclaimed the top on spot on the Billboard 200 album chart.

The unique ehh-err squeaking that plays throughout “The Box” helped the song gain traction during the past few weeks, inspiring several funny TikTok videos that highlighted the sound’s similarity to real-life squeaky situations, like washing a mirror. To find out more about how the now infamous ehh-err was cooked up, Genius linked with producer 30 Roc and Atlantic Records A&R, Keefa Black, who were both in the studio when the song was made. 30 Roc said, “[Roddy] came and was like ‘ehh-err, ehh-err,’ and we all looked at each other like ‘What the hell? Where’s he going with this?'”

Before “The Box” went No. 1, though, Bieber was fiercely attempting to push “Yummy” to victory. He even reposted (and later deleted) instructions made by a fan telling Spotify users to “create a playlist with ‘Yummy’ on repeat” and “let it play while you sleep.” Bieber’s somewhat desperate efforts prompted Roddy to briefly troll him with a tweet, “stream yummy by justin bieber 💪🏽”.

Let’s go, Roddy!
